David had little option but to start playing with The Felling Band at an early age as his grandfather, Maurice Grainger was secretary and Eb bass player. Moving from tenor horn on to baritone and then quickly onto Euphonium he then moved to The Westoe Colliery Band and then to Newcastle Brown Ale as Solo Euphonium.
David also performs throughout the region as a vocal soloist and with The Felling Male Voice Choir, where he is conductor. After a break from banding of around 10 years, David has returned to The Felling Band and, once again, is enjoying performing and contesting with the band.
As David has recently returned to brass banding, one of the proudest moments must be the recent achievement winning the regional championship 1st section at Darlington where the band performed superbly.
David graduated from Open University and gained his Masters degree from University of Sunderland where he works as Head of Systems. He is married to Helen and has one daughter, Rebecca, who is learning piano and will hopefully take up brass.
