Terry was taught to play Cornet by his grandfather at Newfield Salvation Army Band and after a spell on Euphonium, he stopped playing when he was a teenager. His daughter Andrea started to play with the then Felling 'Silver' Band and Terry was enticed to play for the Band at 'one job' at the Durhan Big Meeting. He has now played with the Band for 28 years! During his time with the Band, Terry has played at 5 National Finals competitons, played on the BBC's pop televison programme 'The Tube', played for her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and played two concerts at The Sage Gateshead along with hundreds of park jobs on rainy days playing to two old ladies and a west highland terrier!!
Terry has always tried to embrace change and has had a crack at instruments including the Eb Bass which he recalls as being too heavy to carry and that he couldn't afford a bigger car to carry it! Terry then reverted back to cornet and has now acheived his aim of becoming assistant principal 3rd Cornet.
Terry has been with the Band through thick and thin and has played in all sections from 4th to Championship section. Unfortunately, Terry missed one of the Band's greatest moments when they won the North of England Regionals in 2006 because he was on holiday in Peru. He did make up for it the year after by playing in the winning performance at the 2007 Regional Championships, thus making his name as the first assistant principal 3rd Cornet to achieve the North of England 1st Section double!!
Terry is married to the lovely Mary who has the knack of getting the Band excellent draws at competitions - she seems to be blessed with the midas touch! Mary is always there to support the Band and always has a word of encouragement for everyone, her support for Terry and the Band is much appreciated by all.
Terry & Mary have four grandchildren, two of which, Emily and Tony play in Bands in the Midland and North West regions. Tony plays trombone with Roberts Bakery Band and Emily plays cornet with Audley Brass along with her Mum Andrea.
Of their other grandchildren, Sophie plays Cornet in her school Band and Rebecca plays Saxophone in a Big Band.
Along with Haydn Raynor, Alan, Janice & Sheila Corbett, Cliff Milburn, Ian Clayton, Ray Poole, Colin Brewis, Ian Rogerson & Sharon Poole (to name just a few), Terry has been a stalwart member of the Band. His contribution to the Band has built the foundation to it's recent success - long may it continue!
