Birdland was originally written for the jazz fusion band Weather Report. Composed by Joe Zawinul in the 1980's, it relaunched the popularity of jazz music and brought new fans to the genre. The Band performs here live at The Sage, Gateshead in Philip Sparke's exciting arrangement. Listen out for some great kit playing from Kris Miller!
The Band are featured again here live at The Sage, Gateshead in Philip Sparke's arrangement of Li'l Darlin'. Written by the prolific big band composer Neal Hefti, we bring a 'cool jazz' feel to our programme which features Gavin Stewart playing some fine jazz cornet.
The Water is Wide or O' Waly, Waly to give it it's more traditional title, features our Solo Cornet bench of Jonathan Holden, Nigel Stedman, Janice Miller & Gavin Stewart in this lovely arrangement by Andrew Duncan.
Ruby Tuesday was of course a hit for The Rolling Stones way back in the 60's. Ruby Tuesday takes its name from a chain of American restaurants which at the time, were popular with composers Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. The Band plays an arrangement by Alan Catherall who gives the piece a 'Hooked on Classics' feel to this 'Stones' hit.
We are proud to feature the Band's winning performance of Goff Richard's Voyage of Discovery recorded live at the North of England Regional Championships 2006.
In 2005, the Band gave their services free of charge to entertain the crowds at The Sage, Gateshead for BBC Children in Need. During the live feed coverage, the Band were featured playing Songs of the Quay by Goff Richards.
Euphonium Duo, Phil Richardson are featured here as Laurel & Hardy in Sandy Smith's slapstick composition Another Fine Mess. The Band appear here at Gateshead's Caedmon Hall in a charity concert for Brass Band Aid in October 2005.
